Safeguarding the Future of Multilingual Assessment

ALTE’s mission is to set standards of language tests and assessment, sustain diversity of languages (both spoken and signed) through our commitment to multilingualism, and maximise impact of language teaching, testing and assessment in Europe and beyond. Our seventh international conference considers how we can safeguard fair, valid and ethical practices in the light of new developments and innovations in our multilingual field.

The theme is divided into four strands.

 

Defining the Construct of Multilingualism in Language Assessment

How can more emphasis on multilingualism and plurilingualism be encouraged in our field? How do we define this construct? What policies and practices have been, and can be, implemented to encourage this? How can using the CEFR Companion Volume help?

Papers in this section may include, among other areas:

-          Newer features in the Companion Volume regarding Mediation and Plurilingualism
-          Multilingual assessments
-          Testing of regional and less widely-spoken languages
-          Sign languages

Innovations in Language Assessment

What is the future of language testing and assessment? What innovations that are happening now will have a meaningful impact on language assessment in the future? How can advances in technology be used wisely in our field?

-          Automatic marking
-          Technological solutions for special needs/requirements
-          Adaptive tests
-          Learning-oriented assessment, including less formalised testing
-          Connections between teaching and assessment
-          Personalisation and gamification of assessment
-          The CEFR Companion Volume and beyond

Fair and Valid Language Testing and Assessment

In today’s ever-changing world, how do we continue to make language assessment fair and valid? How do we avoid malpractice? How do we make testing fair for all? How do these aspects impact and benefit the test-taker, our primary stakeholder?

-          Processes for training and standardisation of examiners
-          Towards a Q-Mark: Creating a validity argument
-          Fraud in online testing
-          Ensuring fairness in language testing

Considerations of Ethics and Justice in the Multilingual Context of Assessment

In the current situation, where such ideas are sometimes challenged or ignored, how can we as a profession remain ethical? How will educational policy affect language testing and how can we maintain ethics in this?
